ABOUT RESKINNED MUSIC
Hello! My name is Ben and Reskinned is music for myself and everyone. I was raised in a small town as part of a strict southern baptist church where my dad played the piano and my mom interpreted for the deaf. My dad also worked as the janitor in my junior High School. I was overweight, rebellious, angry, and alienated. My life was filled with constant conflict. I left high school a year early and my parents' house at the same time. Through battles with addiction and self-loathing I came to a point where I could commit myself to my soulmate and self-improvement through formal education. After marriage, we immediately started having kids. After college, I immediately started as a worker advocate for low wage workers based in Detroit. Five kids and ten years later, I made the decision to spend more time at home and develop my music as art. I've djayed, made beats, wrote songs, battle rapped, sang, and learned instruments my entire life. More important to me has been my faith in Christ. Despite the pain and confusion caused by religious abuse, hypocrisy, and mental illness, my faith in Christ has persevered. I witnessed mental illness fully disable my dad and watched his church 'family' distance themselves from him in the process. He eventually let himself deteriorate and passed away alone in 2015. It is with the lens of intimate experiences with faith, religion, mental illness, socio-economic oppression, fatherhood, isolation, depression, philosophy, life, etc. that the lyrics I'm inspired to write are composed. I hope my music is there for people when they need it and helpful to someone in the course of their existence. Cheers!!!
